Last week we read a book called It Used to be Green Once, after we read the book we had to do the reading task. In this task we had to draw conclusions about the book, at the end we had to rate our working. I think I did a good job so my scores were either three or four. Why is the Treaty of Waitangi Important?
In the year 1840, the treaty of Waitangi was signed. The treaty of Waitangi is a vital part of New Zealand and its history, and the reason why is because it created peace between the Maori and the English people. When the treaty was signed, it wasn’t very peaceful because the British didn’t keep their promise but the Maori people got what they wanted and there was peace. The treaty gave the Crown the right to govern New Zealand, and all promises were fulfilled.
The Promises of the treaty
The treaty has many values that are very important to the Maori people and their culture. If the treaty wasn’t made, there would be no schools teaching Maori and embracing the culture. That is why we have Waitangi day to remember all those people who signed the treaty that promised to protect and let all Maori continue living in New Zealand as Maori, the treaty also gave the Crown the right to govern New Zealand.
The Maori People’s rights, and why it’s important
Under Article Three of the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori gained ‘all the Rights and Privileges of British Subjects, when the treaty of Waitangi was signed. It was such a privilege and honor to the Maori people and their culture, to have their right to live in New Zealand. One of the promises from the treaty was that the crown promised to Maori, the benefits of royal protection and full citizenship. This means that the Maori people got to live in New Zealand and live peacefully, throughout their lives. This was a very important occasion for the Maori people because if they couldn’t live in New Zealand there would be nowhere to go, plus none of our schools would know our legacy and the history of New Zealand.

Today for Extension, I had to look at different kinds of protest and research what date it ended and start, after that I had to put them all in order from the earliest to the latest.
